Why is a logo for your lawn-mowing business that important?
Why is a logo for your lawn-mowing business that important?
Logos are an essential part of any brand identity. They have the power to set you apart from your competition and improve the recognition of your business. A logo can also help establish your company’s authority.
But is this important for a lawn mowing business?
Well, that depends on how you answer the following questions.
-
Do you want to grow a good-sized lawn mowing business?
-
Do you want better results for less money when you advertise?
-
Do you want people on the street to remember your business so they can find you when they need you?
If you answered Yes to any (or all) of these questions, you need a logo.
Benefits of a Logo.
When people see your business, it will probably be in passing. They will see your business’s name, which may stick in their mind, but your logo seals the deal.
You have probably heard me talk about this before, but I will repeat myself because this is important.
Most people will need to see your business at least seven times before they start remembering who you are.
A logo will help make your business easier to remember. People remember names, but logos are subconscious memory that ties in with your name. People will recall images with less effort than words, which can act as a trigger.
If you have ever studied how memory works, one of the most common techniques is associating words with pictures to improve recall.
This is the logo’s job.
Defining Your Brand
Branding might sound like a strange word to associate with a lawn-mowing business, but in truth, all good companies are brands.
Branding has been around for hundreds of years, and the principle has not changed a lot. The first cattle farmers created simple designs to mark their livestock. They would not brand the words “Property of M.K Smith” on an animal when a simple logo would do the same job.
The beauty of having a logo associated with your business name is that you can now start using the brand (your logo) to raise awareness of your business.
Make your logo part of all your printed and online material. Your name and logo should be on everything from your business cards to your posts on social media.
Improving Recognition
Not only can you use your logo on all of your images (therefore protecting them) you can also use it in other places where words will not work, such as your Facebook and email profile pictures.
When people start seeing your logo all over town, they will remember who you are when they need a lawn-mowing guy.
This is when the magic starts happening.
People start searching online for your business instead of the generic “lawn mowing near me” search. This makes it a lot harder for other businesses to compete with you.
Now I’m not just making this stuff up. I have done it myself.
Our small three-person business called “Gecko Lawns” has been in the top five searches in Hamiton (population 165000) for the last five years.
We outrank businesses spending up to $1k a month on advertising regularly and get at least 20 new leads a week. And we do this on a marketing budget of $1 a day.
We could only have done this by investing in a good logo and putting it everywhere.
Now that I have (hopefully) sold you on the idea of getting a logo, I will talk about how you get one.
Where do you find a logo?
I drew my logo, but I would only recommend that if you have skills in that department. I have a background in signwriting and cartooning, so it was a no-brainer for me. However, if you do not have “cartoonist” on your resume, dont panic; there are other options.
You could use a tool like Canva if you would like to have a go at doing your design. It even has a colour wheel to check out what colours work best for your branding.
You could try a place like Fiverr and get someone to design a new one for you. There are a few dangers with Fiverr. Make sure the person you deal with is supplying original work. You want to avoid paying big dollars and getting clip art. Not only could this be bought cheaper elsewhere, but you may also see other people using it.
Another place you could try is 99designs. I know of people who have used this site and got good results.
Lastly, if you are on a budget, try searching for lawn care clipart. This search could lead you down a rabbit hole, so be careful. Also, be sure to read the fine print on any agreement. There may be some restrictions on the clipart you are buying.
Design Considerations
When designing your logo, consider the colours and fonts that best represent your brand and how it will look across different mediums.
When working on my design, it helped to have a long layout and the standard layout. I could also use this in narrow spaces like the front of our vans.
Prop up the logo and walk away from it. If it’s hard to read, it needs more work.
You want your logo to be easily read across a busy street.
Taglines
You may or may not want a tagline beneath your logo.
We use Gecko Lawns,” The Fine Art Of Lawn Mowing”
You could use your tagline to describe what you do for the benefit that your business supplies.
I have an article on signwriting your lawn mowing vehicle here if you require more information.
